Another oily seed that plays an important role within the
nutrition of birds is
Hemp (Cannabis sativa). Those
grains can be found in seed mixtures for parakeets, cockatiels and
bigger parrots. Only few budgies know how to open the big and
hard hemp seeds. In most cases they remain unopened within the
dishes of budgies if they are part of a seed mixture. Those birds
who have learned to get along with the hard seeds, love to eat
hemp.
According to the fact that hemp is an oily seed, its content of the total amount of food should never make more than five percent for small birds like budgies. Hemp contains about 30% of fat. This makes it a good food for budgies who need strength after a serious illness.
