Canary grass Canary grass seeds (Phalaris canariensis) should make out about 50% of a budgie seed mixture of good quality. That's what European vets usually recommend. The birds can easily open those longish seeds. Due to this budgies like to feed their chicks on Canary grass during the breeding season. Canary grass contains about only six percent of fat what makes it a healthy food for pet birds like budgies that easily become overweighed.
