In most parts of central Europe one can find the Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) on fields, at the edges of meadows, and near roadsides. It grows to 60 or 100 cm, under perfect conditions it can even grow to 200 cm. Half-ripe seeds can be found from May to August or September, ripe seeds from July to October. Budgies and many other pet birds prefer half-ripe seeds. Barnyard grass perfectly fits for freezing. It's a perfect additional food for the winter season because you can defrost it in small portions and give your birds some healthy fresh food even in the cold season.
