Great Wood-rush

Great Wood-rush (Luzula sylvatica)
Great Wood-rush (Luzula sylvatica)

The great wood-rush (Luzula sylvatica), also known as greater wood-rush, from the rush family (Juncaceae) is relatively common in some areas of Central Europe. It grows to a height of between 30 cm and 90 cm. At the top of the upright stems are the plant’s many small seeds, which are triangular in shape.

The flowering period of the great wood-rush lasts from May to June, and semi-ripe seeds can be found from around mid-May to early/mid-July. This plant species can be found in moderately shady forests. It prefers beech forests.

Many small pet birds like their half-ripe seeds very much, the ripe seeds are often accepted less readily.

You can find more photos of this species on NABU-naturgucker.de (German website, but also available in English language).
